What is One of Your Biggest Homeschooling Challenges?

Image
We are now on our 2nd year of homeschooling. Things are easier now than when we first started. One of the main challenges we had was the scheduling. Photo credit: Pixabay (Pexels) We didn't know how to fit the curriculum in 1 year, more so, what to do for each subject daily. We got left behind in some subjects, but with God's grace, we were able to catch up at the end of 4th quarter. This year, we are doing it the easy way. Since we're planning to finish the curriculum in 40 weeks, we just divided the lessons for each subject into 9 weeks per quarter. We left 1 week specifically for preparing for the portfolio presentation at the end of each quarter. We do weekly scheduling, instead of daily. One of the realities we had to face and struggled with last year is that life happens, and having to follow a daily schedule is very stressful. Now, I even let my son pick which subject he wants to tackle first. We do 4 subjects of 45 minutes each every weekday, with 15 minute

Teaching Kids Character

Image
Our homeschool provider, Homeschool Global , recommends Achieving True Success: How to Build Character As a Family for the values curriculum. We do 1 character per quarter, My son finds the lessons from the book a bit hard to relate to. Photo credit: Amazon Good thing my friend recommended Kids of Integrity ! Now I use this to supplement the Achieving True Success book. Each character lesson comes with a section for prayers for both parents and kids, a kick-off craft, bible stories for you to discuss, hands-on activities, verses to memorize, examples of how to praise and discipline your kid with respect to the character being taught. Photo credit: Kids of Integrity My son loves the kick-off craft! We usually read the bible stories in the morning, and the stories chosen for each character lesson are so easy for the kids to relate to. The examples on how to praise or discipline your kid with respect to the character being taught, teaches parents to be more attentive and

How to Plan your Homeschool Year

Image
As I mentioned in my previous post, it's almost the start of our homeschool year. My son is actually vacationing in his grandpa's place right now, and will be back this weekend in preparation for the start of lessons on Monday. Last year, I planned the curriculum on a daily schedule. This year, I want to be more lenient with our schedule. With the planned vacations, some sudden out of town trips and errands, we'll be following a weekly schedule instead. Photo credit: Pexels I was able to attend my Homeschool Global's curriculum planning training this summer. And basically, the basic rule of thumb is to just divide the lessons or chapters or units by 4 semesters so you would have an idea of how much lessons you need to finish each quarter. You can also divide it by the number of weeks depending on how soon you want to finish the curriculum. This was what I did last year, targeting 36 weeks of lessons plus 1 week each quarter for portfolio planning and presentati

4th Grade Curriculum

Image
It's almost the start of our second year of homeschooling! We try to follow DepEd 's school calendar, as per my son's request, so that he would also have the time off and can play with his friends who go to regular school, whenever they have no classes. This means school starts on June 5, 2017, and should end April 6, 2018. Although based fro our experience last school year, we finished as early as March, even with the vacations we took. Christmas break will be from December 22, 2017, with classes resuming on January 3, 2018. Photo credit: Pexels In preparation for this school year, I have printed out some pages from the 7 Step Homeschool Planner . I love that the site owner, Tina, has a lot of options for the free printables. I used The Ultimate Homeschool Planner last year, but I feel that I wasn't able to maximize it, as there were a lot of pages that I didn't need. So for my son's 4th grade curriculum, which is our second year homeschooling, here a
